Reason #76 from Michelle Sperry
I have recently finished reading the “Mormon Mirage” and found this book to be both insightful and comforting. This book does an excellent job of stating the historical facts and background of the Mormon religion as well as explaining many of the Mormon church’s past and present doctrinal beliefs. This book would be an excellent read for anyone exploring the beliefs of the Mormon church or anyone who is a member and questions the Church’s history and doctrine. As a convert from Mormonism to Christianity, I stand strong on the belief that you must “know what you know” about your beliefs in order to defend your faith. This book gave me additional confirmation that my research into the teachings and history of the Mormon church...
Article in Prodigal Magazine
Recently Andrew Rogers wrote the following article about me in Prodigal Magazine. It was also published in at least one secular print magazine. From Mormon to Christian author: Latayne C. Scott Thu, May 14, 2009 Reviews http://prodigalmagazine.com/from-mormon-to-christian-author/ Former Mormon, Latayne C. Scott, recently published two new books: Latter-Day Cipher, A Novel (Moody Publishers) and The Mormon Mirage, 3rd Edition: A Former Member Looks at the Mormon Church Today (Zondervan). In each of these books Scott’s passion to challenge Mormonism’s teachings and expose its inconsistencies rings true. Her ten year history as a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), and her subsequent conversion to Christianity, are the initial...
Reason #75: Can you uncult a cult?
What follows is the fifth of a five-part series that Zondervan published on their academic blog, Koinonia. The subject matter may repeat some previous “365″ posts, but I will nonetheless publish them for those who might not want to scroll back through all the previous posts. The Mormon Mirage 5 of 5 by Latayne C. Scott A Former Member Looks at the Mormon Church Today 5 of 5: “Can You Un-Cult a Cult?” I know that many people are unsure today of the definition of the word “cult.” When I was writing one of my books, Why We Left a Cult: Six People Tell Their Stories (Baker), several challenges arose. First, of course, was to formulate a working definition of a pseudo-Christian cult.1 Second (and, I thought at first, easiest) was...
We have winners! And there will be more…
I realize that it wasn’t easy to try to post a comment on my site for the last couple of weeks. In fact, it was impossible! That’s because I changed my domain name server. Some of my posts got lost in the process — and all of the comments you made. But I am grateful for the comments, and true to my word, I am now announcing the five winners of free copies of The Mormon Mirage. So, congratulations to Sue Collins, Sharon Taylor, Scott Pollard, Chadwick Banning and DwightK, all of whom I have contacted privately. Both Zondervan and Moody are planning a blog tour for The Mormon Mirage and Latter-day Cipher. Are you a blogger? Willing to read and blog about one or both books on June 30? Contact me and I’ll get you free...
Reason #74: Because of how betrayal feels– and can be conveyed
What follows is the fourth of a five-part series that Zondervan published on their academic blog, Koinonia. The subject matter may repeat some previous “365″ posts, but I will nonetheless publish them for those who might not want to scroll back through all the previous posts. The Mormon Mirage 4 of 5 by Latayne C. Scott A Former Member Looks at the Mormon Church Today 4 of 5: “It’s All About the Story” Some Mormons have begun to publicly criticize me for “spending my life criticizing the LDS Church.” It’s true that 5 of my 14 books are about Mormonism. However, that’s a fraction of my writings, and until this year the last book I published on the subject was 15 years ago. If I were the rabid dog nipping at the heel...
