Two new online articles praise The Mormon Mirage
The furor over a Dallas pastor calling Mormonism “a cult” has led to the release of two new online articles that have nice things to say about my book, The Mormon Mirage. I’m particularly grateful to see that someone who doesn’t know me personally says that I’m not inclined to “bash” Mormons. Read that article, “Former Mormon Agrees With Baptist Minister that ‘Mormonism is a Cult’”. Also, a podcaster in Great Britain is reading the book. Here are some of his comments. He says that my book scares him. Did it scare you, and if so,...
Reason #125: The Point of No Return in Deciding to Leave
The previous post used an analogy to describe the feelings that many have when discovering that Mormonism’s claims of divine origin are false. I’ll use a quote from my book, The Mormon Mirage, that describes the end of that process for me, when I was confronted with a make-it-or-break-it fact, which was the “point of no return” for me: One final acid test remained at the end of the summer. Since I had a scholarship and a writing job waiting for me at BYU, I decided to return, promising Dan that we would marry—if I came back in December feeling about Mormonism as I did then in August. As I was packing, I felt as if the summer had been a dream. Or was it the real part, and the rest of my past life the illusion? I was unhappy about leaving...

But things were very different, because the Church’s doctrines had changed so much – what with the ban on black men in the priesthood, the fact that all American Indians were no longer considered Lamanites… Her face went completely blank. “What do you mean, about blacks and priesthood?” She had grown up her whole life a Mormon and never knew. Her skepticism of my account was patent, even when I told her, “I was there. I believed.” (from The Mormon Mirage 3rd Edition: A Former Member Looks at the...
