The Fetus Can Remember

A recent study by Netherlands-based scientists shows that not only do unborn children respond to stimuli such as buzzing sounds – they remember those stimuli. In fact, the Washington Times cited the study as saying that fetuses nearly two months before birth can not only remember things, they “are able to store information and retrieve it four weeks later.” That’s “wonderfully made.”  That’s a living, intelligent person.  That’s what you and I were, from the beginning, months before our own births. But there’s a flip side to what the study found.  Not only can the fetuses respond to and remember stimuli –they can also learn to ignore it.  The study calls this “habituation”—where a sound becomes familiar, then just unremarkable...

Audio Postcard Series– How to Talk to Your Mormon Friend

A little behind my intended schedule — but — The audio postcard series, How to Talk To Your Mormon Friend, is almost ready. What is it? When you enter your email address on my homepage in the sign-up box, you will begin to receive 2-3 emails from me a week. Each one will contain an “audio postcard” link. You have two options — click on the link and hear a 3 minute message about how to talk to your Mormon friend. Or click on the link at any time later. It will be waiting for you. The first part of the series talks about how Mormons define God, salvation, and other issues — usually with the same words you use, but with very different meanings attached! The second part of the series is “what works.” I will call...

Article in Prodigal Magazine

Recently Andrew Rogers wrote the following article about me in Prodigal Magazine. It was also published in at least one secular print magazine. From Mormon to Christian author: Latayne C. Scott Thu, May 14, 2009 Reviews http://prodigalmagazine.com/from-mormon-to-christian-author/ Former Mormon, Latayne C. Scott, recently published two new books: Latter-Day Cipher, A Novel (Moody Publishers) and The Mormon Mirage, 3rd Edition: A Former Member Looks at the Mormon Church Today (Zondervan). In each of these books Scott’s passion to challenge Mormonism’s teachings and expose its inconsistencies rings true. Her ten year history as a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), and her subsequent conversion to Christianity, are the initial...

Reason #75: Can you uncult a cult?

What follows is the fifth of a five-part series that Zondervan published on their academic blog, Koinonia. The subject matter may repeat some previous “365″ posts, but I will nonetheless publish them for those who might not want to scroll back through all the previous posts. The Mormon Mirage 5 of 5 by Latayne C. Scott A Former Member Looks at the Mormon Church Today 5 of 5: “Can You Un-Cult a Cult?” I know that many people are unsure today of the definition of the word “cult.” When I was writing one of my books, Why We Left a Cult: Six People Tell Their Stories (Baker), several challenges arose. First, of course, was to formulate a working definition of a pseudo-Christian cult.1 Second (and, I thought at first, easiest) was...

Reason #73: The cost of losing one’s God

What follows is the third of a five-part series that Zondervan published on their academic blog, Koinonia.  The subject matter may repeat some previous “365″ posts, but I will nonetheless publish them for those who might not want to scroll back through all the previous posts. The Mormon Mirage, pt. 3 of 5 by Latayne C. Scott Agreeing with Spurgeon The Mormon Mirage is not the only book I wrote about Mormonism. In another, Why We Left Mormonism: Eight People Tell their Stories(Baker), I interviewed seven other people to find out what was effective in reaching them while they were LDS, what mistakes Christians made, what advice they offered. In another, After Mormonism, What? Reclaiming the Ex-Mormon’s Worldview for Christ(Baker), I applied the...
